Political Interference Hampering Fight Against DDT Use By Fishermen

The Director of Extensions at the Lower Manya district Mr Philips Amoah said the interference from some big men in the cause of an arrest goes a long way to interfere with dealing with the problem of crook fishing means by some fisherfolk at Kpong.

Some concerned fishermen at Kpong in the Lower Manya district of the Eastern Region have condemned the resort to unorthodox fishing methods by their colleagues. They accused their colleagues of resorting to the use of dynamites and DDT which according to them destroy the fingerlings as well as the eggs.

He said authorities turned a blind eye to the situation until fishermen met in a meeting at the fishing harbor where issues pertaining to this were put on the table.

According to them, strict warnings were given to culprit fisherfolks to desist from the dangerous habit of dynamite and DDT use which killed thousands of fingerlings as well as the dynamites which cause damages of their own. Despite strict warning from the authorities, the fishermen complain that some unscrupulous colleagues still engaged in the practice.

The concerned fisherfolk say that the failure on the part of the police to act on reported cases contributed to the problem.

Adding his voice to the issue, Mr Edmund Aboagye a social communicator said establishing a fisheries department for Lower Manya was the solution to the problem.
