Party member deliberately fired gunshots – NDC chair

The Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ayawaso Central, Ebenezer Arkutu says the party member who fired gunshots at a reconciliation meeting in the constituency did so deliberately.

The constituency meeting ended unexpectedly after a party member suddenly pulled out a gun and started firing gunshots in the air.

Though no one was injured in the process, his action consequently disrupted the programme and forced constituency executives to abruptly end the meeting.

The abortive meeting was to discuss the party’s plans for unity ahead of a dispute settlement meeting at the national headquarters of the NDC on Wednesday to be chaired by General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia.

Mr. Arkutu told Citi News he suspects the Regional Chairman and his supporters masterminded the incident that occurred today.

“There were gunshots, two empty shells… We presented the incident to the Nima Police so they are already doing their work …for somebody or group of people to possess guns that means that it was premeditated and it was well planned because I don’t see why you are coming to a constituency meeting of fellow branch members and then you come with a gun. Then that means it was not as a result of a mere misunderstanding which is normal but then you realise that it is well orchestrated to harm somebody…”

Following disturbances in the constituency for some time now, the National Executives of the National Democratic Congress decided to meet the leadership to resolve issues affecting the smooth running of the constituency located in the Greater Accra Region.

Ahead of that meeting, expected to be held this week, the constituency executives met all the Branch Executives from the 131 Polling Stations within the constituency on Sunday, February 28, 2016.

The meeting was progressing steadily at the residence of a member of the party, Dr. Offei Agyeman at Kokomlemle, when one of the participants who could not hold his anger in a heated argument allegedly pulled a gun and fired gunshots to disperse the meeting.
