Organized Youth For Kroboland Takes On Atta Akyea…But E/R NPP Calls It A Shame

Following comments made by the Member of Parliament for the Akyem-South constituency that the siting of a proposed university at Somanya was inappropriate and that Akyem-Abuakwa was better suited for the siting, a group known as the Organized Youth for Kroboland has addressed a press conference to state its position on the issue.

The press conference which ended a while ago was held at the Somanya Community Center, was attended by a cross section of the press and addressed by the Convener; Mr. Samuel Paddy stated that the group consisted of youth from Lower Manya Krobo, Upper Manya Krobo, Yilo Krobo as well as all Krobos in Ghana as well as the diaspora.

According to Mr. Paddy, the group was scandalized and saddened by the comments of honourable Atta Akyea to the effect that the proposed Eastern University should not be sited at Somanya but in Akyem Abuakwa. He revealed that the citing of the university on Kroboland was long overdue as Ghana’s first president; Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah sought to establish a University of Agriculture on Kroboland, a proposal that did not materialize after his overthrow.

The group also criticized other statements made by the Abuakwa-South MP such as comparing the population of the entire Abuakwa State to only Somanya which is just a district capital of Yilo Krobo as well as his mention of the Akyem Paramountcy as the biggest in the Eastern region. The group condemned these utterances and said they were akin to creating tribal conflicts in the country.

But responding to the press conference, Mr. David Prah, Communications Director of the Eastern regional wing of the New Patriotic Party, described the press conference as a shame and a cheap political propaganda to divert attention of the public from the fact that the government had lost the plot in the administration of the country.

Mr. Prah said Krobos were discerning and would not fall for cheap politically-sponsored agenda, stating that he saw nothing wrong with the comments of the Abuakwa-South Member of Parliament. In his view, the intention of the group was only to create tribal sentiments that will not wash with the people.
