No Respite For Akpamu Farmers

The devastating effects of last year’s climate change has found its way into the year 2016 as many farmers in most farming communities find it very difficult to produce farm crops due to the climate change and its resultant harmattan which has resulted in a lot of fire out breaks on most farms across the country.

Particularly hit are farmers in the Akpamu community in the Yilo Krobo district of the Eastern region. In an interview with Mr. Francis Kwaku, a vegetable farmer in Akwamu on the Akuafo Se Sen segment of the Rite Morning Ride, he noted that vegetable farmers in the Akpamu community cultivate such vegetables as tomatoes, cabbage, garden eggs among many others.

According to Mr. Francis, however, the climate change has badly affected them which has resulted in low productivity in the absence of the rainfall. He was however relieved that though there was a lot of fire out breaks on their farms that will never affect farmers from bringing food staffs to the market centers.

He added that the past year was a little better that gave them a yield of about 50 percent because there was a little rainfall from the month of July. Comparing to the New Year however, he said 2016 has been hectic so far for farmers to produce crops.

But aside these challenges, he lamented about the poor infrastructural challenges of the community which include the lack of potable water to drink and resulting in them commuting from Akpamu to Nkurakan for water, a journey that takes between two to three hours.
