New Cassava Variety Introduced To Farmers

A new variety of cassava has been introduced by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) into the Ghanaian system to help farmers to boost cassava production in the country.  Mr. Philips Emmanuel Amoah, Municipal Extension Officer, Agriculture Directorate of Manya Krobo revealed this on the Rite Morning Ride on Tuesday.

He said the newly introduced variety of cassava include Bankye Hemaa, Otuhia, Sika Bankye and Ampong. He said these varieties have a very good yield and produce three times that of the known cassava variety. He added that they have introduced it to Lower Manya and it was doing very well with the growth rate and that it takes a relatively shorter time to mature within six to eight months.

According to Mr. Philips they have cultivated 12 acres of Bankye Hemaa at Obele Manya and 30 acres at Oborpa with the aim to distribute it to the farmers free of charge in other to familiarize that brand with them.

Describing the appearance of the bankyehemaa, he said they are huge in appearance, white-coloured in cover and tuber and produces a lot of tubers, adding that the Bankye Hemaa and Ampong are very good for fufu and other domestic use.
