An official of the Electoral Commission at Tamale in the Northern region Jocelyn Techi has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress of attempting to register minors in the ongoing limited voters registration exercise in the area.
The situation has created chaos at the Sakasaka registration center, Starr News’ Eliasu Tanko reported Friday.
According to the EC official, members of the NDC who are pushing to register the minors are also threatening to beat up agents of the NPP who are protesting their action.
Speaking to Starr News, Ms. Techi said the action by members of the ruling party is distracting affairs at the polling center.
“The challenge here is the minors they are registering, it’s too bad. They come with a minor to register and when you try to challenge, they come with a quarrel that if you don’t give the card to the person they will beat you up. It’s so bad… at the end of the day, people will come and plead that they need the card.
“There is this man who has been sitting here, he will keep calm and when the day ends, he will plead and take all the cards that were challenged and distribute it to them. He is making everything difficult for us. So they are making our work difficult for us, especially the NDC agents, their chairmen and executives,” she stated.
So far, 60,000 individuals have been registered at the center with 900 forms challenged.
The ten-day limited registration exercise is scheduled to end on Sunday. It is unclear if the EC will extend the date despite the numerous concerns raised by the political parties.
