Mushroom Production Must Be Given A Major Boost

By Austin Ofori:

The leader for the Eastern Regional Mushroom Growers and Exporters Association, Mr. Stephen Yaboah has stated that the production of mushroom in the country needs to be taken seriously and given a major boost.

Mr. Yeboah who was speaking on Rite FM’s ‘Feed the Future Platform’ under the Mobilizing Action towards Agricultural Sector Improvement on Tuesday said the production of mushroom was essential because it was one of the vital nutrients of the body.

According to him, mushroom used to be a natural crop that grew by itself and which was not necessarily cultivated-that practice, according to the leader has now changed. Mr. Yeboah explained that mushroom was now cultivated through new technologies on a large scale and its production has to be sustained to ensure the availability of the crop throughout the year.

The president added that the mushroom growers now had the production of mushroom at heart due to its high nutritional value which he said was very good for the body.

As to how the mushrooms are produced, he explained that they used the peels of cassava, yam, saw dust amongst others to serve as fertilizer to grow their mushrooms.

Also contributing to the show, Mr. Emmanuel Nuettey, a mushroom farmer added that the producers were however unhappy about the lack of assistance for their production. He maintained that it was their aim to produce the mushroom on a large scale because its consumption was very good for the body.

He therefore took the opportunity to urge Ghanaians who hitherto did not see the value of mushroom consumption to consider it as an alternative to meat. Their major challenge however is the lack of the necessary funds to expand their businesses.
