A member of the Ghana Fisherman Council, Mr. John Manoma from the Central Region has revealed that the month May is not a month for fishing but rather to prepare their net and wait for the main fishing season which is July.
Mr. Manoma who was speaking in an interview with Rite news asserted that careful observations they have made have identified the month of July as the month to expect a bounty harvest, adding that the month of June is used by the fishermen to make careful observations of the sea as well as the weather conditions.
According to Mr. Manoma, the fishes around the month of June find their way to the surface of the sea which therefore makes fishing in July a strategic time for the major fishing. He added that a good fishing harvest usually begins from the Western region, which then descends to the Central region, then to the Greater Accra region before finally ending in the Volta region. This is the time fisherfolks get their good income.
Having been in the industry for about 52 years now, Mr. Manoma insists that fishing today is far different than what pertained in the olden days.
On the issue of oil and fishing, he noted that countries that have oil have difficulties in fishing because fishes always follow light and the spillage of the oil content onto the sea surface blocks the sunlight which in turn turns the fishes away from the surface of the sea.
On the issue of premix fuel, Mr. Manoma appealed to the government to give them outboard motors to aid their work.
