Founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor has put up a strong defense for the minors in the voters register.
In her view, the minors don’t necessarily vote in an election but clandestinely acquire the voter ID card to receive remittances from their relatives abroad.
“In this world, you cannot trust anyone with money, not even your family so the children see the registration as an opportunity to get an ID card just to receive monies from their parents abroad,” she argued.
Akua Donkor made the comment when she took her turn at the forum to debate the arguments for and against the compilation of a new voters register for the 2016 general elections in Accra.
The two-day event being moderated by five eminent personalities is to collate different views about the electoral roll whose credibility is being questioned.
All Political parties including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC) and civil society groups who made presentations at the forum all conceded the register has some problems.
But whiles the NPP has defended its call for a new voters register to be compiled, the NDC on the other hand insist an audit will save the country time and money.
In support, Akua Donkor said there is nothing wrong with the current biometric electoral register.
She insists claims of a bloated register by the NPP is just a figment of their imagination and should be treated with the contempt it deserves.
“Any register should be changed after ten years, this one is only two years and there is nothing wrong with it. The NPP should give us a break,” she declared.
The GFP leader said her party is proud of the electoral system because it is robust and has all mechanisms in place to address whatever issues whether real or imagined.
Akua Donkor called on the NPP to focus on their campaign and put their house in order instead of “giving the EC unnecessary pressure.”
