Ministry of Fisheries to revamp Lake Bosomtwe

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development is to revamp Lake Bosomtwe with fish stock to increase fishing activities on the lake.

The restocking includes the supply of a large quantum of cat fish and tilapia fingerings to increase the fish stock in the lake.

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Ms Sherry Ayittey, announced this when she addressed a durbar of the fisher folks along Lake Bosomtwe at Abono in the Bosomtwe District in the Ashanti Region.

The durbar was aimed at interacting with the fisher folks to educate them on what the government was doing to help revamp fishing activities along the lake.

In attendance were some fishermen from the 22 communities along the lake, fish smokers/sellers, and traditional authorities, among others.

Research

Ms Ayittey announced that a fact-finding team comprising fish experts would soon be dispatched to the area to conduct a research on the type of fish in the lake after which samples would be taken to the laboratory for reproduction.

She explained that large quantities of the fingerlings of the needed fish would be put in the lake to restock it with large quantities of cat fish and tilapia.

The minister said the decision to revamp the fish stock in Lake Bosomtwe stemmed from the fact that the current climate change had had a negative impact on fishing in the sea, hence the need to look for alternative sources of fish inland.

She explained that currently, Ghana was ranked third in the consumption of fish out of 52 countries in Africa, hence the need to increase the supply of fish in the country through sources such as Lakes Bosomtwe and Volta and River Ankobra.

Fishing input

Ms Ayittey announced that to ensure a successful increase in the fish stock, the government would provide free fishing nets and two tricycles to help transport fish and other goods along the lake for the development of the community.

The minister urged the fish smokers/sellers to form groups to benefit from financial credit from the ministry.

She also announced the release of 30 aluminium boats to the communities along the lake to facilitate the transportation of fish and other items from one community to another.

Ms Ayittey appealed to the youth in the area to avail themselves of training in the rearing of fish in ponds and in tanks which would be established in the area and appealed to chiefs in the area for land for the project.

The District Chief Executive for Bosomtwe, Madam Veronica Antwi-Adjei, appealed to the government as a matter of urgency to look at the state of the roads along the lake to improve the lives of the people.
