Minister Calls For Agric Census To Strengthen Food Production

By Richard Danquah:

The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Mohammed Muniru has called for an agriculture census to enable the country to make projections with regard to food production.

He said the last agriculture census was conducted years ago and added that the data collected then were no longer relevant and reliable and could not be used for planned undertakings in the sector.

Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana National Association of Farmers and Fishermen (GNAFF), Rev. Kwadwo Nkrumah has urged the ministry to undertake the agriculture census programme in order to improve the activities in the agric sector.

According to him, these will help the farmers and the ministry as well since it is going to create avenue and platform for the Farmer Base Organizations to address their challenges and also to gather the data of all farmers in the country.

Rev. Nkrumah who was speaking to Rite news added that the ministry should take the opportunity to commence this programme to a successful end rather than talking about it without implementation. According to him, the ministry should learn a lesson from the first attempt made about 37 years ago which did not yield anything productive but do everything possible to make good use of it to help the agric industry.
