MANGO FARMERS ANGRY OVER LOW EXPORT THIS SEASON

There are still about 600 tons of mangoes untouched and many still hanging on the mango tree serving as a meal for birds and worms. This year’s bumper mango harvest that is supposed to be joy is rather calling sorrows to mango farmers if government don’t savage the situation immediately. The chairman for Lower Manya Krobo Mango Farmers Association has said.

The Chairman, Mr. Edward Amanor attributed this to the early maturity of the fruits this season and lack of enough export and processing companies to patronize the fruits.

But he noted government could have helped in diverse ways to boost the export and processing industry by putting up mangoes farmers’ association together and providing them with financial support and even set up export or processing company to employ people to work there. ’this is a lucrative business on its own.’ He added.

He mentioned a lot of big farms came on board this season which increased their output but buying rather took a different turn this season. The farmers are really angry and ‘we are calling a meeting to address the issue.’’

He noted their hopes are now left in the mercy of the local buyers who is in fact can’t really absorb that much so they have no option than to leave room for loss. They are lobbying with some processing companies to come to their aid which is still on the table of discussion.

However, he lamented, Blues Skies Company limited and HPW fruit processing companies have bought thirty (30) and six (6) tones respectively with the Akorley park house exporting a few quantity quite recently.
