MAKROSEC In Distress…Students Studying Under Trees

A visit by Rite news to the campus of the Manya Krobo Senior High School in the Lower Manya Krobo municipality of the eastern region has revealed some dire infrastructural and logistical challenges confronting the school.

Rite news reporter Felicia Sarfoa visited the school recently and reports that a lot of challenges are confronting the school which was established forty-seven years ago.

On the campus for instance, about four classes were observed studying under trees with all the attendant distractions to their studies. While they studied under the trees, some classes were blessed with desks on which to write but other classes were not so lucky as they had to contend with sitting in plastic chairs with no desks or tables on which to put down their notes, making learning under such a situation very difficult.

That is not all; students were equally faced with putting up in congested dormitories as more than required numbers were forced to share rooms. Trunks and luggage which hitherto should be in the dormitories were seen scattered on the corridors.

Another challenge was the problem of students being forced to dine together in a dining hall too small for a student population of more than 2200.

The situation was no different at the school clinic which had only two beds.

Rite news therefore spoke to the school prefect for the Manya Krobo Secondary School, miss Ama Ninson who spoke on behalf of her colleagues. Though she is now in her third year and now promoted to studying in a classroom, she recounted her ordeal of suffering a similar fate during her first year when she also studied from under those trees.

She lamented that several appeals to authorities through her School’s Student Representative Council have proved futile. She called on the Ministry of Education to consider the plight of Senior High Schools in similar situations across the country and come to their aid.

Other students this reporter spoke to also expressed worry of studying under trees, a situation they said made learning very inconvenient.

Responding to the issues however, the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Gbadago Francis told Rite news that they were aware of the issues raised by the school. He said the Chief Director of the ministry of Education was on the school’s campus last year to acquaint himself with the problem.

He however added that between 2011 and 2012, the school benefitted from several infrastructural benefits under the ‘Upbringing of SHS projects’ which included the construction of dormitories, maintenance sheds, an administration block, Home Economics Block, a 16-unit and 18 unit classroom blocks respectively, a 12-seater Water Closet toilet facility, the rehabilitation of the Science block as well as a visual Arts Block.

He however added that the problem generally had to do with the large numbers of the student population but assured that the completion of a 15-unit classroom block whose construction had stalled, would help solve the situation. He said the contractor would hopefully get back on site in February to complete the project.

Mr. Gbadago also added that USAID is going to engage the Ministry of Education to construct dormitories for some schools across the country to help improve the accommodation challenges facing the schools.

On his part, PTA chairman of the Manya Krobo Senior High School, Rev Osikeni Narh also said the parent association was aware of the challenges of the school and was therefore assiduously working to help address the challenges. He also added however, that the problems are arising due primarily to the increasing numbers of the student population.
