Maize Worms Haunting Farmers

Ahiador Catherine:

Maize farmers particularly are now over their wits end as they face the wrath of destructive worms that have invaded their farms, causing lots damage in the process to their maize crops.

Mr. Sampson Dzidzornu, a maize farmer at Akuse has been sharing this concern with Krobea Asante on Thursday’s Akuafo Sesen on Rite FM. According to him, maize farmers across the country have suffered the worm invasion and the activities of the pests which have attacked their farms, leading to severe loss of farm produce in the process.

What is worse, he noted was the lack of reliable pesticides to fight off the worms, thus leaving their crops at their mercy.

Mr. Dzidzornu who pointed out that the worms have invaded their farms for the past two months said the effects on their farms and crops is a sorry episode and if caution is not taken, the country stands the risk of hunger in the coming years.

Even though extension officers visited their farms at Akuse and prescribed a herbicide for them to buy, their search for the said herbicide in virtually all Agro Chemical stores to purchase has proved futile as they simply did not get any to buy.

As a result of this, their farms have been left to the fate of getting destroyed by the newly discovered worms on the maize plants.
