Audio: Lower Manya NDC under Siege – Office Locked up by Branch Executives

The Concerned Executive Members of the National Democratic Congress, NDC in the Lower Manya Krobo Constituency has made good its threats to ‘advise themselves’ should the national executives of the NDC refuse to suspend their constituency executives, by locking their party’s constituency office at Nuaso, a suburb of Odumase-Krobo.

The irate members who took the action on Saturday morning took the action after a forty-eight hour ultimatum given their executives to either resign or the national leadership takes action against them fell on deaf ears. The members clad in red arm bands and party T-shirts, locked up the offices in a bid to refuse the constituency executives access into the office.

Spokesperson of the group, Mr. Dennis Dunyo who addressed the media maintained their earlier stance that the party’s national leadership must call their national executives to order by suspending them or the executives resign their positions.

The members earlier on last week blamed the party’s ‘abysmal performance’ in the 2016 parliamentary elections on their executives and leveled a number of damning allegations against them. These included supporting one candidate during the NDC parliamentary primaries in November, 2015, contrary to the party’s overall interest, placing untrained party agents at some polling stations or one agent instead of two and accused the leadership of the party of failing to pay their agents designated to monitor the December polls though the monies meant for their payment came from the regional secretariat.

Another accusation the Concerned Branch Executives and Members leveled at the door step of their party and for which reason they are calling for resignation or suspension included why the party ‘aided in transporting some individuals to register at different constituents during the December elections which their main rivals, the NPP were the ultimate beneficiaries.

‘The party is no more attractive to the people and so the grassroots are calling for the suspension of the constituency executives,’ Mr. Dunyo charged. ‘They have made our party unattractive and if our national executives also fail to address this issue then we better forget about the Lower Manya seat in 2020 and we’ll not sit down for this to happen. The locking up of the place is therefore the first action,’ added.

The group who denied that they were being manipulated by any quarters to stage the agitation also chastised their leaders for the closure of the party’s office ‘for several months now, a situation which they described as unacceptable. ‘This place was not opened during the campaign and the election period and so you ask you, how do they operate. If any branch executive or any party member has any grievances, where do they go,’ Mr. Dunyo quizzed.

He accused some executives of the party of hoarding party resources and logistics in their rooms since the office is non-operational.

On the party’s forthcoming branch executive elections in April, the group demanded that the party’s national executives delegate representatives to come supervise the elections, a situation that speaks volumes of the depth of loss of trust in the constituency leaders.

The group which called the locking up of their office as a ‘first step’ threatened to take ‘further steps’ in order to press home their demands. As to which steps they intend taking, the spokesman responded, ‘when we get to the bridge, we’ll cross it.’

When contacted for his response, constituency chairman for the lower manya krobo NDC, Mr. David Walter Homenu told Rite news that the executives were fully aware of the call and actions by the members. He however added that the issue was being handled by the disciplinary committee of the party pending their recommendations, following which the executives will address a press conference to respond to the accusations.
