Lower Manya Mango Farmers Under Siege From Fulani Invasion

Chairman for the Lower Manya Association of Mango Farmers in the Eastern region, Mr. Edward Amanor has cried foul about the activities of Fulani herdsmen whom he accused of destroying their crops and thus putting them in a huge debt.

Speaking to Mr. Amanor on the Rite Morning Ride, he reiterated that it wasn’t only the farmers who suffered at the hands of the Fulanis but also the people of Lower Manya as a whole. A frustrated Mr. Amanor said that the Fulani herdsmen looked on and actually guided their cattle to feed on their mangoes plantations.

According to him, about eight farmers have so far reported the situation at hand to them though he is aware that a far more greater number could have been affected, noting that the activities of the herdsmen and their cattle have destroyed about fifty acres of their farmland.

He further noted that they have reported the case to the Municipal Assembly, to the department of Agric and also to the Akuse Police. He said the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Alcolatse has assured them that the municipal security council will hold a security meeting on the issue before any decision is taken on the issue. This according to Mr. Amanor is a big bother to them since that could take some time, a situation that could result in more destruction to their crops.

He said the affected farmers won’t want to take any action before the authorities jump in since it appears they have turned a blind eye to the situation.
