Land Acquisition A Major Challenge To Farmers

Austin Ofori Addo:

The Chairman for the Farmers Welfare Society at Ahinkorase Adawso in the Eastern region, Mr. Edmond Ani Danso has stated that land acquisition is a major challenge to farmers for the purposes of farming in the country.

Mr. Danso who was speaking on Rite FM’s Agric Forum with Krobea Asante stated that they are not able to cultivate maize this year because how to acquire the land was a big problem to them. According to him, they even asked the landlords to lease their lands to them for the purposes of their farming activities but they were not willing to give it out to them.

He was worried that even willing landlords made bizarre demands such as equal sharing of the produce between them, a situation the farmers were also not comfortable with.

The farmers have therefore launched an appeal to the landlords to help farmers by releasing their lands to them at reasonable rates such as the produce being divided into three with a third going to the landlords while they the farmers take the remaining two and landlords take one.

He was convinced that this being a reasonable arangment would most probably encourage and draw the youth into the agric sector.

He noted that recently, people from the agric ministry visited them where farmers took the opportunity to alert them on the challenges confronting them as farmers.
