Lack of Student Interest in Agric Courses due to Ignorance

By: Joyce Bedeley:

An agricultural science teacher at the Yilo Krobo Senior High School, Mr Kpabitey Abraham has attributed the low interest from students in pursuing agriculture and agriculture-related courses to the ignorance on their part as far as career opportunities in that sector is concerned. According to Mr. Kpabitey, the much needed encouragement that needs to be given students in the pursuance of agric in the various SHSs is also largely absent thereby causing students to rather chase after other courses other than agriculture.

Mr. Kpabitey made the observation when he appeared as guest on the Rite Morning Ride with Krobea Asante on Wednesday. The agricultural science teacher who was speaking on the issue of low interest in agric science called for the orientation of students on the various career opportunities that come with agriculture science, a step shat should boost their interest in agriculture.

The lack of text books and course books, he identified as another challenge bordering on the study of agric that takes a toll on both agric students and their teachers adding that these materials aid in the teaching of the students.

But miss Patience Dautey, an agric student at the same school, won’t let her spirits be dumped by the setbacks. Announcing her resolve to this effect, she noted on the same platform that ‘agric is life and she would therefore not dump its study even after secondary education,’ adding that she was prepared to pursue it to the tertiary level. ‘’I will pursue agric even at the tertiary level,‘’ she told host, Krobea Asante.

‘I have come to realize that agric forms the basis of life and every individual each daily depends on agric to survive,’ Miss Dautey emphasized. This, she added should guarantee her self-employment instead of depending on government for employment as well as feeding herself from her own produce.

She called for scholarship schemes for she and her colleagues pursuing agriculture as part of motivating them while also calling on the government to make available more practical lessons from the theories they have studied.

Master Christian Asare, also a student of YIKROSEC who was on the same show called for more harvesters in the system, despite the fact that there are quite a number in the system. Additionally, he believed that it will be best to implement technology to help in the cultivation of some crops especially mangoes on tall trees rather than using manpower.
