Kpong Market Women Frustrated With Authorities

By Ishmeal Newton Orga

Market women at Kpong in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern region have shot out some grievances regarding the poor state of their market structures. To buttress their point, they have threatened to boycott the forthcoming elections next year if authorities don’t step up to live up to their necessary responsibilities.

In an interview with some of the aggrieved market women, they told this reporter how the lack of market proper market stalls to sell their goods or produce at their current location is in a total ruination, compelling them to ply their wares right in the sun, a situation they say in really inconvenient to them and their patrons.

“Whenever it rains we don’t even have any place to put our wares, goods and produce than leaving them in the rain since we have no choice,” they said.

They said this negligence on the part of the various relevant authorities has really caused them enough harm since it has led to the collapse of their businesses. This is in spite of several attempts to reach relevant authorities for assistance which have proved futile.

They said some of their colleagues who went for loan facilities have not been able to pay back because the nature of their market does not boost their activities while adding that the various relevant authorities must either re-locate them to boost their market activities or build a new and permanent market centre for them.

Despite their frustrations, the market women are still calling on authorities and concerned stakeholders to come to their aid.
