Indiscipline is the Cause of Gas Explosions – Fire Service PRO

The Public Relation Officer of Ghana Fire Service Mr. Prince Billy Anaglatey has revealed that the current rampant outbreak of fire as a result of gas explosions and the trend it follows is clear that it is caused by indiscipline on the part of gas attendants, tanker drivers and their mates.

Mr. Anaglatey speaking on Rite News, stated that “if you look at the trend of gas explosion in the country, it’s appears the time the tanker drivers and their mates wanted to off- loading gas was when the incidents occurred.”

He said that this means something goes wrong and something always gets missing anytime these tanker drivers wanted   to off- load their gas to these filling stations. He said safety measures are not adhering to.

“Before you off -load a gas you need to follow certain safety mechanisms on the ground but they don’t go by it which is a problem,” he said.

The Fire officer noted that before gas is off-load, tanker drivers must off their vehicle engines and the gas to cool. According to him, fire extinguisher must always be available at fuel filling stations, mobile phones and electronic gadgets must be turned off on the reach of fuel stations to avoid fire outbreak.

In similar words, the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has also accused the recent gas explosion on failure to comply by some safety lapses at the MANSCO gas filling station – the station that exploded last Saturday.

Chief Executive Officer of the Authority, Hassan Tampuli, who made the revelation, said a letter was given to MANSCO through the Oil Marketing Company (OMC) that supplied it with LPG, Hills Oil to address the lapses by close of day Monday, 4 September 2017.

“In the case of this particular station, we did the monitoring and inspection in April 2017, so it was part of Greater Accra inspection and monitoring exercise. We wrote to them a letter which was sent to them on 10th of July. What the letter said was that, we’ve done monitoring and inspection of your station and we come to the realization that they fell short of a number of things and we catalogued them. One of the things we said was that, their forecourt was too busy of activities which includes taxi rank, food vendors among others. So we thought that, that was unsafe so they should put in place the necessary safety measures,” Mr. Tampuli said.Mr. Tampuli said his outfit also wrote a letter to six other filling stations that had questionable safety measures.
