Importation Of Cabbage Hurting Local Cabbage Producers

By Newton Ishmeal Ogah:

As much as the importation of various crop types continues to hamper the farming sector, the practice still continues in certain sectors. Cabbage farmers in Akpamu in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region are thus calling on the government to quickly move in and stop the trend of the importation of cabbage from other neighbouring countries such as Togo.

The call was made by Mr. Kwaku Francis, a cabbage farmer at Akpamu on Thursday’s Morning Ride with Owuraku Asamoah. Mr. Kwaku Francis said, the importation of cabbage into the country over the years has resulted in the destruction of the market price for the locally produced ones in the country. He said they produce on a large scale but lack the market for their produce. He also accused so-called Market Queens of unfairly determining the price for their produce.

The distraught farmer further said the market queens go to countries like Togo to buy the cabbage at a lower price and thereby neglecting the ones produced in Ghana. That is not all; he told the Morning Ride that another problem affecting them is the lack of irrigational scheme in the district as these do not allow them to expand their farmlands in order to produce more. He said the low rainfall pattern experienced this season had also affected them since most of their farm produce got rotten.

He has therefore pleaded with authorities to come to their aid in order to expand their production.
