If You Can’t Pay Us, Don’t Employ Us – GMA

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has cautioned government against employing the services of doctors if it is unwilling to fix the inefficiencies in the payroll system.

They argued that in the 21st century, it is unheard of that essential services workers will render their services to the nation for 11 months without being paid their salaries.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, the Deputy General Secretary of the GMA, Dr. Justice Yankson said: “How come that this day and age, you employ somebody for 11 months and you tell me that simple five steps that you are going to go through to ensure the person is paid, you mean this person has not been able to go through with it till date?”

“Then what kind of country are we running? If the systems are not working, then they shouldn’t employ us,” he fumed.

On Monday, 35 out of the 91 junior doctors stormed the offices of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to demand the payment of their 11-month salary arrears.

The doctors who have been complaining for months said this was their last resort to get their monies paid since all attempts have failed.

According to Dr. Yankson, the inefficiencies within the public sector must be fixed immediately because the trend cannot be allowed to continue.

“I think that the tall and short of this is that there is too much inefficiencies in our system. Right from the Ministry of Health, through the Ministry of Finance and the Controller and Accountant General’s Department; there is too much inefficiency,” he fumed.

He pledged the support of the GMA for the action taken by the junior doctors saying, “we support them, they are fighting for a genuine cause.”

He warned the Ghana Police Service not to make any attempt to intimidate the junior doctors “because we will not allow that to happen. What kind of system is this?”
