Hunger to hit Ghana due to climate change

The country coordinator of Climate Action Network Ghana, Mr. Samuel Dotse has said hunger is just around the corner because of the implicit effect on the recent climate change.

He said most of the farmers will lose their crops this farming season due to heavy rain and if this happens, food shortage will occur.

Speaking to Rite News, Mr. Samuel explained that most of the crops farmers harvest will be for the family consumption and not for commercial purpose.

He said what happened in the 1980’s where we imported maize into the country is likely to repeat itself this year, if government does not put in place concrete measures.

He further stated that what we need to do as country is to invest more in research to be able to come out with cereals that can withstand both rain and drought.

He mentioned that, researchers should be able to develop seeds that when planted will yield more to reduce the rate of importation.
