Honesty and sincerity needed to run the nation – Konadu Rawlings

The National Democratic Party (NDP) is strengthening its grass-roots base to build a formidable political party ready for political power in 2016, its founder and leader, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, has declared.

“Before you can call yourself a serious political party or organisation, you need to build an effective structure,” she told the Daily Graphic in Accra at the weekend.
Sharing some insights into what the NDP was doing in between elections and the party’s preparation towards the 2016 election, the former First Lady asserted, “we are working to ensure that region by region the party is ready for 2016..”

With a year-and-a-half or so to go for the 2016 polls, Nana Konadu indicated that the NDP was making sure its polling station executives, the real grass-roots people, were functional.

In line with that, she disclosed that the party had established Community Organisation Bureaus (COBs) in seven out of the 10 regions.

She mentioned the Central, Western, Eastern, Ashanti, Brong Ahafo and Volta regions as having functional COBs.

“Very soon, we will cover the entire expanse of the country.

“If we can get the COBs to work well and be the conscience of society, I am sure they will put leadership on its toes so as not to lead the nation astray,” she argued. NDP Congress

On when the NDP would go for its national congress, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings simply stated, “we are not looking beyond December this year to complete all our constituency, regional and national congresses.”

She gave an assurance that the party would be in full readiness by January 2016 to prosecute an effective campaign.

She also pointed out that the NDP was working to keep its supporters on track of honesty and hard work for the nation and its future.

She, therefore, challenged them to ensure that whatever they did in their small corner across the country must be exemplary. Honesty and sincerity

Nana Konadu also called on political parties to rein in their communicators to sanitise the political discourse.

The first point of need, according to the former first lady, was honesty, sincerity and integrity from all ranks.

She, therefore, appealed to people’s social sense of responsibility, saying “If you love the country so much, and you want to run affairs of the nation, you must have honesty and sincerity. We need these virtues to do what is right and proper, and we must start from the highest echelon of society right to the lower level.”

Present at the interview were Alhaji Mohammed Frimpong, Deputy General Secretary, Mr Owusu Bempah, Communications Director, both of the NDP and Erika Amoako-Agyei, an author.
