Hazardous substances in food can kill – Dr. Alex Nuer

Marketing and Engineering consultant in the Agri-business industry, Dr. Alex Nuer, has noted that foreign substances that gets mixed up in the foods we eat could be harmful to the human body as well the environment.

He said hazardous substances categorized in three groups including, Chemical, physical and biological substances could all be harmful if not handled well adding that most of the time, these substances are transported on or in the foods from the farms to the market, then to the various kitchens.

Dr. Nuer said this in an interview on Rite FM’s Food Safety Nutrition and Hygiene program.

According to Dr. Nuer, some of these hazardous substances can kill instantly when eaten whiles the effect of others could be slow but still harmful to both the human body and the environment.

He said hazardous substances could be glass, hair, bacteria, salmonella, viruses, some fertilizers, metals and even insects.

He called on the general public to make good use of extension officers, nutritionists and health centers in their communities for proper education on how to avoid harmful substances.

He however noted that the magnitudes of the effect of these substances are usually based on the quantity of the substance deposited in the body or the environment.

He advised that individuals should learn how to protect themselves from these hazardous substances saying, “We must cover food and water to prevent these hazardous chemicals from entering or having access into our foods and we must keep hygienic homes.”
