Guard Against Food Poisoning

A Lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Food Science – Dean of Graduate Studies at the University of Ghana, Professor Tano Debrah has cautioned against the consumption of food contaminated with anaerobic organisms, which he noted is poisonous to the human body.

According to Prof Tano who was speaking to Nana Ama Sarfo on Food Safety, Nutrition and Hygiene show on Tuesday on Rite FM, bacteria is harmful and cannot be easily detected with the naked eye.

Prof Tano revealed that most anaerobic organisms live within the colon (big intestines) and perforate holes in the intestines which could result in severe complications including the possibility of death.

Professor Tano also advised that such implements used in food preparation in the kitchens such as knives, chopping boards, cooking utensils, etc be cleaned well before use and called for proper cooking of food before consumption in order to safeguard the health of consumers.

He also advised that lettuce, cabbage, carrots and other vegetables should be washed with salt solution before consumption and also advised that food ought to be covered always to avoid cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea.
