GRIB Inaugurates Asutsuare Rice Business Centre

The Ghana Rice Inter-Professional Body (GRIB) has inaugurated the Rice Business Centre at the Kpong Irrigation Scheme Conference Hall at Asutsuare in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. The president of Ghana Rice Inter-Professional Body (GRIB), Mr. Imoro Amoro in his launch speech revealed that, actors in the rice value chain in Ghana are faced with various challenges which include credit, access to certified seeds, mechanization services, access and cost inputs, marketing of produce, irrigation and land development to cultivate.

He added ‘’As a way to mitigate these obstacles, it is imperative to have strategic change in orientation where value chain actors discard the charity model of receiving agricultural support and embrace the business approach to agriculture’’.

According to him, GRIB in its five years strategic document (2013-2017) reached a consensus to establish Ghana Rice Business Centre (GRBCs) within the various rice growing zones to deliver effective commercial services and also to make access to inputs and facilitation of services easier and accessible to the members. Services to be provided include mechanization services, market oriented advisory services, inputs distributions, market facilitation and few others to mention.

According to him, the preparedness of all members and stakeholders to access these services will have a massive impact on the rice sector in the country and reduce the numerous challenges and have a maximum benefits from their participation in the local rice value chain at large boost local rice production, resulting in job creation and reduction in rice importation.

Mr. Imoro mentioned Addicent Foods (Mechanization), RMG (Agrochemicals), AMG (Fertilizers) as key partners working with GRIB to deliver these services. He urged all rice farmers to join GRIB and enjoy the benefits from it.

He solicited for support from Government and development partners to setup more of the GRBCs which will go a long way. Speaking to Mrs. Regina Ayerkor, President of women’s group and Mr. Gabriel Kweku Agbesi, Chairman of the C2 project confirmed the numerous benefits the members have derived from joining GRIB. They encouraged all rice farmers to participate in the activities of the GRIB to enhance the promotion of the local rice production.
