Gov’t urged to partner PPP to address post-harvest losses

The director of Agro Health Farm Complex, Mr. Edmond Osei Kissi has called on government to partner with private company to address the long standing problem of post-harvest in the Agric sector.

According to him this problem is a pain-in-the neck for farmers and a great threat to country’s food security and needs an urgent solution.

Ghana currently loses about GH¢700,000 every year in post-harvest losses because of poor harvest management practice in the country.

A recent report from the ministry of environment, science, technology and innovation indicates that the country losses between 20% and 50% of all vegetables, fruits cereals, roots and tuber produced each year while it struggles to achieve food security and eradicate hunger.

He noted that, government seeking the intervention of the PPP will help solve the issue of post-harvest losses because the private institutions or the individuals can provide intensive services like supplying innovative products which can contain the crops.

Mr. Kissi added that, there could be the provision of chemicals which will be used to preserve the crops after harvesting and other education programmes for farmers all in collaborative effort of government and private company.

He has advised the farmers to practice good agronomist practice to prevent these post-harvest losses.
