Government Urged To Sensitize Youth on Govt’s Agric Policies

The Eastern Regional Agric Extension Officer, Mr. Papa Allotey has urged government and other stakeholders leading the crusade for agricultural development to sensitize the youth through persistent education on the planting for food and jobs policy to lure them into the agriculture sector.

According to the Extension Officer, regular education on government policies such as planting for food and jobs, one district one factory and the one district one dam projects and their benefits to farmers especially, will lure more youth into farming to make a better living than roaming about looking for jobs which are not in the system.

Under the Planting for Food and Job project which is one of the government’s flagship programmes, farmers are expected to be provided with improved seeds and subsidised fertilisers to ease their work and boost production.

Speaking in an interview with Captain Adabugar, during the Akuafo Sesen segment of the morning show on how to encourage the youth and Agricultural Students to go into agribusiness and farming, Mr. Allotey said that Ghana is a blessed agriculture land and for that matter, government should take advantage of it by investing seriously in the agriculture sector.

He said that before the youth can be lured into the sector; government should pay more attention to the sector by tackling problems that face farmers, such as looking for market for farm produce, construction of roads leading to farming communities, solving irrigation challenges, provision of credit facilities among others.

President Akufo-Addo during the 2016 electioneering promised to establish a dam in villages in the three Northern regions of the country to boost agriculture via a well-planned irrigation policy.

He said a robust irrigation policy “one-village-one dam” will make Ghana crop all year round and eventually become a net exporter of most foodstuff.

Government in its 2017 budget earmarked ¢94.5 million for the implementation of the project.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August, 2018 launched government’s one district, one factory project, with the promise to drive industrialization across the country.

The launching of the project marks a giant step towards the fulfilment of a major promises made by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the heat of the 2016 general elections.
