Government Transforming Agriculture From Poor For The Better – Agric Minister

The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has stated the president’s vision to transform agriculture is clear and it’s a step in the right direction to sustain the economy of the country and transform the sector from its poor performance.

Dr. Afriyie Akoto addressing the gathering at the 33rd National Farmers’ Day celebration in Kumasi, claimed this year’s event was significant in several perspectives.

According to him, the president is committed to change the face of agriculture in the country making provisions to increase subsistence farming, avert: slow growth, low productivity, weak financial support and high post harvest loses through technology and agribusiness driven, resulting to food security and profitability

He could not hide government enthusiasm to make agriculture more attractive.

“Government seems to make agriculture more attractive and sustainable avenue for employment and investment for both Ghanaians and foreigners alike”.

The Minister has hinted the government is obliged to design policies and strategies (Agriculture friendly) that are informed by lessons of the past in the country to help farmers.

He further noted that this has called for systematic and well-coordinated approach to ensure realization of the vision of the president.

The Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo led government has rollout interventions through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture which are expected to provide empathies for increase in production and productivity to promote private sector investment in the country.

“We have seen better and appreciable improvement in the agriculture sector due to these numerous policies enrolled by the current government to make agriculture play a vital role in our economy.”

The Agriculture sector has grown 4.8% within the first nine months of 2017, an improvement over the growth of 3.6% for 2016 calendar year.

Notable interventions that have contributed to this positive development includes, “timely supply of affordable inputs such as fertilizers and free seeds to the farmers, provision of ready market for farmers through the national buffer stock company,” Hon. Dr. Afriyie said.

He lamented that the success they have posted so far has been achieved even in the face of some serious constraints particularly the fall army worm invasion which the government through the ministry has effectively managed and brought it under control.
