Government must help with irrigation

Chairman for the agricultural sector of the Association of Ghana industries, Mr. Winfred Osei Owusu has called on the government to come in to help farmers check the problem of climate change by supporting them with irrigation.

In an interview with Rite News Mr. Owusu who noted that irrigation farming was a very expensive venture said banks were now reluctant to give out loans to farmers because of the effects of the climate change on their farming activities. He said banks now thought twice about whether the rains would come down or not which invariably decides whether they give out loans to the farmers.

This according to him was negatively affecting farmers as the choice of irrigation is an expensive choice also, adding that though the private sector was trying its best, it cannot do it all alone without government support since irrigation is a very expensive venture.
