Government Charged To Provide Food Security

By:Prince Paul

Mr. Kofi Essel, Regulatory Officer at the Food and Drugs Authority has tasked government to do its maximum best to towards securing its people through ensuring food security in the country. According to him, the failure of any government to achieve this invariably results in the government resorting to the importation of food in order to feed its people.

Mr. Essel made the observation in an interview with Nana Ama Sarfo, host of the Food Safety, Nutrition and Hygiene segment of the morning show on Tuesday during a discussion based on steps towards enhancing food security in the country.

‘It is the duty of every government to sustain food in its country and in a situation where a country has to import or export food, then that is a clear indication of its deficiency in producing enough food. On the other hand, if the government is able to produce in excess of the needs of its country, then that can be enough security for its people,’ Mr. Essel noted.

According to him, any country that does not have the efficiency to produce enough for its people would invariably resort to importation to supplement what it has.

Food security simply refers to the availability of food to those that will need it and also at an affordable cost and free from all forms of infections. It also has all the needed nutrients and can be available all year round.

The Regulatory Officer noted that ‘most people think that food security is the shortage of food but which is not the meaning.’ According to him, food security is the situation where food is in its abundance, available, sustainable and at a price which can be affordable by all and free from all forms of infections and also rich in the needed nutrients and accessible all year round.
