Gitmo saga: ‘Don’t portray Mahama like a fool’

Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture has questioned the motive behind the opposition against government’s decision to host two ex-detainees of the Guantanamo Bay Camp in Cuba.

According to Dr. Hannah Bissiw, the protest in spite of assurances of maximum security portrays President Mahama as a person without ‘common sense’.

Opposition political parties and civil society groups including the Christian Council and the Catholic Bishops Conference are mounting pressure on government to send the two ex-terror suspect back to their home country.

Ghana will host for the next two years, Mahmud Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby had been in detention for 14 years, after being linked with terrorist group Al-Qaeda.

But government has justified with stay with President John Mahama challenging Christians to show compassion.

However, the Catholic Bishops maintained that their stay poses a national security threat and has hinted it will lead a demonstration to compel government to heed to their plea.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Wednesday, Hannah Bissiw expressed disappointment especially in flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo for criticizing the gesture by government.

“Why are we acting as if the president is a fool? President Mahama has common sense and knows what he is doing so let’s trust him on this” she stressed.

The Deputy Agric Minister also expressed shock at the manner in which the Gitmo two have been branded as terrorists.

She maintained that Umar Muhammad Bin Atef and Khalid Muhammad Salih Al-Dhuby had not been found guilty of any terrorism-related offences by any court of competent jurisdiction.

“I am a loss that Nana Akufo Addo about whom lofty claims have been made regarding the defence of human rights would today seek to set aside due process and pronounce guilt on persons who have been unjustifiably held for 14 years without charge” she bemoaned.

Hannah Bissiw urged Ghanaians to make sleeping dogs lie adding that the Mahama-led government will not compromise Ghana’s security to anything in the world.
