Mr. Edward Asadu, the 2015 Ashanti Regional best farmer has asserted that Ghanaian farmers have become vulnerable and desperate. Mr. Asadu who made the assertions Tuesday on Rite FM’s Akuafo Sesen lamented that farmers have become very vulnerable and desperate primarily due to the unfavourable climate changes.
As a result of these developments, plantain farmers together with cassava farmers are losing the hope of ever succeeding in the farming sector. He added that the development could lead to farmers leaving the sector which could lead to food shortage in Ghana.
Mr. Edward Asadu who intimated that he is not specialized in cassava farming revealed that he got into cassava farming because he had difficulties feeding his 500 pigs.
According to the Ashanti regional best farmer, the current shortage of cassava in Ghana is perhaps ample evidence of the difficulties the sector is experiencing and which has left consumers on the edge. He however blamed gari producers as also being a part of the collapse of the cassava production in the country, noting that the gari producers bought their cassava at cheap prices and thereby a fall in the cassava business.
The slow pace of development of the agriculture sector in the country has been a subject of concern for most farmers. This is leading to a sense of disillusionment, frustration and the sense of passion for agriculture.
