Ghana Lacks Incentives For Agric Research

By Catherine Ahiador:

Ghanaian senior researcher at the university of Bonn Germany, Dr. Justice Tambo has decried Ghana’s lack of incentives in the agricultural sector compared to that of Nigeria. Dr. Justice was categorical statement that Ghana is far behind when it comes to agricultural research works, adding that less than 0.3% of Ghana’s domestic product is expended on agric annually.

Dr. Tambo made this statement at a congress of the International Federation of Agric Journalists in Germany. The 0.3% he noted is considered one of the lowest in Africa. Meanwhile, countries with larger GDP placing including Nigeria spend almost 2% of their GDP on research. Dr. Justice Tambo therefore calls on the Ghanaian government to sit up, adding that Nigeria has developed a lot of outstanding institutions in the agric sector.

According to him, Nigeria’s success in agriculture research works would be attributed to their current agric minister who was formerly an agric researcher.  Compared to Ghana, the concern is that there is a limited support for research in the country which is because we actually don’t put the result from the research into practice and even if we do use them, it is on a limited extent.

The international scientist further expressed concern about what they say are limited resources for agriculture research in Ghana which would eventually threaten the agric sector leading to the countries collapse in food security.
