GES Must Re-Introduce Agric Science as a Core Subject

By Joyce Bedeley:

Mr. Alistair Djimatey – Foundation Manager of Blue Skies Ltd, Nsawam has bemoaned the several challenges which continue to confront the Ghana Educational system and its setup. His lamentations arise out of the fact that agricultural science does not receive the much needed recognition in the country’s educational system.

Mr. Djimatey who was speaking as the guest speaker for the 20th anniversary launch of Messiah International School at Akuse in the eastern region, noted that this is regrettable especially in the wake of the deficiencies in Ghana’s ability to feed its populace.

‘Ghana is one country that cannot even produce enough to feed her own people and so I he expects the country to increase the production and enhance agriculture to get educated farmers in the country. But rather unfortunately, agriculture science is not even a core subject but rather is part of integrated science which is very bad,’ Mr. Djimatey observed.

The foundation manager has therefore pleaded with the government to re –introduce agriculture as a core examinable subject which will equip students after school to pursue it even further and that can also help produce educated farmers in the country.

Mr. Djimatey also expressed worry at the wrong use of chemicals by farmers, a situation he attributed to the poor educational background which doesn’t enable them to read instructions on the chemicals in order to use them appropriately.

‘Most farmers in the country use chemicals and the same people cannot even read the instructions on the very chemicals that they use day in and out. There are some crops that must be left for some number of days or hours before consumption after spraying. However, since most of our farmers are illiterates they just harvest and sell them to the public which is a dangerous practice since it stands the risk of killing people,’ he explained.

He therefore urged for the re-introduction of agric science as a core examinable subject to help the country in its aim to project industrialization since this can aid the country feed its own industries which will also help create jobs in the country.
