Gas Explosion Kills Two

A gas explosion at Ngleshie Amanfrom, near Kasoa in the Central Region, has killed two people, with others sustaining serious injuries.

The incident occurred around 1pm yesterday when a welder was said to be carrying out maintenance works on used cylinders which eventually caught fire and exploded.

The two deceased persons, Yaw Dodzi Adzia and Kwesi Ben aka Aponkyeti – both welders – are believed to be 42 and 37 years respectively.

The intestines of one of the deceased reportedly gushed out and the other had his legs chopped off.

According to an eyewitness account, a Kia truck with registration number GM 2532-12 came to off-load some used gas cylinders for maintenance at a welding shop.

‘As the cylinders were being worked on, we suddenly heard an explosion and immediately saw one of the cylinders flying in the air.

‘When we quickly rushed to the scene, we saw two bodies lying down dead while a driver’s mate had sustained serious injury,’ he said.

The eyewitness said he suspected that gas was leaking out of one of the cylinders the welder was working on, which resulted in the explosion.

According to him, the wife of one of the deceased persons is pregnant for nine months.

The dead bodies have since been deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

This incident comes two months after the explosion at the GOIL fuel station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle which claimed over 150 lives while it was raining.

In April this year, another explosion at a fuel station in Dansoman, a suburb of Accra, claimed the lives of two people as two other persons died in a fuel station fire in Kumasi.
