Functional literacy programme for cocoa farmers

A four-day workshop to commence the second phase of the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) and Kuapa Kokoo Collaborative Pilot Adult Literacy Project in selected cocoa-growing areas in the country has been held at Ejisu in the Ashanti Region.

The project is being implemented by the Non-Formal Education Division of the Ministry of Education in partnership with Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union (KKFU).

The workshop was aimed at training and refreshing project facilitators, supervisors and monitors on the content of a New English Primer and a New Facilitators’ Guide prepared for the second phase of the project which commences in August, this year.

The first phase of the project ended in December, last year.

Objective

The overall objective of the project is to equip non-literate cocoa farmers and buyers with the necessary literacy and numeracy skills, capacities and attitudes needed for broader participation in their chosen careers and to enable them to contribute meaningfully to the education and social transformation of their respective communities.

The project is being piloted in eight districts in the country. They are Tarkwa Nsuaem, Prestea Huni Valley, Amenfi Central and Sefwi Akontombra. The rest are Amenfi East and Aowin Suaman in the Western Region and New Edubiase and Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

Advice
