Fulani Threat Rears Its Head In The Volta Region

Some residents at Metamano in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region have declared war against Fulani herdsmen whose cattle are destroying their farms. Some residents claimed the fulani herdsmen leave their cattle unattended to graze on their farms and damage their crops.

According to them, they have reported to the police but to no avail, so they have armed themselves with guns and cutlasses to face the Fulani herdsmen without hesitation.

“They worry us a lot. They have destroyed a lot of our foodstuffs. Last year they nearly lynched a man who was working on his farm for trying to stop them from grazing on his land. If the Fulani men think they are wild, we are going to show them what violence is…,” one of the angry farmers said.

“There is no way we would leave them to graze their animals anymore. We will chase them off with our cutlasses and other weapons we have. It might get bloodier than what happened in Agogo and in the Northern Region if the police do not do their work. We are not permitting them anymore this 2017 year…” he added.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Metamano, Togbe Asiedugbe Tsaku II says the chiefs are working on bringing the Fulani herdsmen to order to ensure peace in the area.

“Herdsmen who leave cows to graze unattended destroy a lot of crops.  There are some of them that we are trying to make peace with. Sometimes, regardless we call on the farmers and the herdsman to resolve issues, if it can’t be resolved; we forward it to the police station…” he said.
