Four robbery victims die in bizarre accident

Four passengers died and seven others sustained injuries when an Albion truck ran over them after they had been robbed by suspected armed robbers on the Karaga-Gushegu road in the Northern Region yesterday.

The deceased, whose bodies have been deposited at the Gushegu Government Hospital, have been identified as Hamza Abdulai, 38; Hajia Bintu, 49; Albert Kofi Allie, 38, and Wumbei Neindow, 23, a student of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).

The injured persons, whose identities were not immediately available at the time of filing this report, are receiving treatment at the Karaga Hospital.

They were among a group of passengers, numbering about 40, on board a Tamale-Gushegu bound Tata bus, with registration number ER 2188-C, who were ordered by the armed robbers to lie down on the road after they had robbed them.

The robbers, armed to the teeth with four AK 47 assault rifles and knives, are said to have stopped the driver of the Tata bus, which was coming from Tamale on the outskirts of Shebu Village.

The incident, according to the police, occurred around 9.30 a.m. yesterday when the robbers signalled the driver of the Albion truck, with registration number AS 9948-F, to also stop but he refused to do so.

Angered by the refusal of the driver to stop, the robbers fired into the truck, causing it to veer off the road and run over the passengers who had been ordered by the robbers to lie down after they had robbed them of their mobile phones and money.

The Karaga District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Mr Emmanuel Botchway, told the Daily Graphic that the police retrieved two empty shells of AK 47 assault rifle bullets from the scene.

He said no arrest had been made so far, but indicated that the police had launched a manhunt for the robbers who, according to Abubakari Zakariah, the driver of the Tata bus, may be of Fulani extraction.
