Food, Safety and Hygiene: Avoid Contaminated Preserved Food

Many efforts have been made over the years to preserve food and fish to duly preserve it and prevent it from going bad. Processes such as salting, drying, frying and canning have been employed to ensure that food is duly protected in order to keep it safe for consumption in order that it does not go waste.

Safety concerns regarding one of these processing methods, that is canning have been raised consistently. However, allaying the fears of consumers, Mr. Kofi Essel –Regulatory Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority has assured rather categorically that canned foods are very safe for consumption. Mr. Essel who was speaking on the Rite FM programme, Food Safety, Nutrition and Hygiene however gave the firm caution that canned food must be handled very carefully to avoid poisoning.

He told programme host, Nana Ama Sarfo on Tuesday that consumers must stay away from dented, bloated and rusted foods since this can be very harmful. He advised that patrons of this kind of foods must take precautionary measures when buying these products.

According to him, buyers must watch out for the physical appearance of the products and avoid prodcuts with physical deformities. The cans of other products, he maintains are rusted and which means the food inside could be contaminated.

‘Do not buy or consume such products even if it for free,’ the officer warned.
