Fishermen Frustrated By High Cost Of Feed

By Austin Ofori Addo:

Fish farmers across the country have expressed concern over the high cost of feed needed to feed the fish. According to him, the inordinately high cost of fish feed has gone a long way to affect fish farming in the country, adding that it was gradually becoming a threat to the fishing sector.

Speaking to Mr. John Oduro Nkansah, a fish farmer at Nsawam on the Akuafo Sesen segment of the Rite Morning Ride, he noted that the most vital thing needed when it comes to fish farming is feed for the fishes which adds up to about 90% of the total cost of production.

He added that anytime the cost of feed goes high, the cost of production goes high as it increases the amount of money invested into the raising of the fish. This is because despite the increment, one still needs to buy the feed in the right quantities to ensure that the fish are properly fed.

According to Mr. Oduro, fish farmers were also at their wits end because even if one took all the feeding precautions rearing the fish for eight months, he may not necessarily get full harvest. He urged the fish farmers to try as much as possible to get their feed at a very low price and get quality fingerlings.

He further stated that fish farming was on the decline because fish farmers who hitherto engaged in its practice were shying away from the sector because of the above challenges.

But that’s not all of their problems. As Mr. Oduro laments, fish theft is also gravely affecting their job. According to him, even though they employ the use of net to keep the fishes, unscrupulous persons still find a way to steal fishes from their fish farms at night adding that they run into huge losses as a result of these developments.
