Fisherfolk In Elmina Resorting To The Use Of Chemicals

Some unscrupulous fisherfolk in Elmina in the Central Region are reported to be resorting to the use of Dynamites and other harmful chemicals in their fishing activities. This according to reports is leaving in its wake serious consequences for consumers and residents of immediate communities across the country.

Nana Akonu, a chief fisherman from Elmina who made the allegations on the Akuafo Se Sen Segment of the Rite Morning Ride on Wednesday noted that guilty fisherfolks were using such chemicals as DDT, carbide and dynamite to kill fish in their fishing activities. He said culprit fisherfolks had always cited the poor catch in recent times as the reasons for their illegal activities, a situation Nana Akonu confirms.

According to the chief fisherman, fishing in the Elmina Township was collapsing due to the poor catch they were enduring. This according to him was making life unbearable for fishermen and their dependents including even their inability to foot their wards’ fees.  That is not all; Nana Akonu also mentions the issue of pair trolling as another problem which authorities must pay attention to.

He said they initially dismissed these stories as mere rumours until they were able to confirm them after investigations.

Nana Akonu finally appealed to the government to safeguard the health of consumers by employing equipment which can be used to test the fishes and determine whether they contain any deadly substances. He suggested this be done along the fishing communities and culprits severely punished to serve as deterrent to other culprits.
