FISHER FOLKS CALL ON GOV’T TO RE- INTRODUCE SUBSIDIES ON FISHING INPUTS

The Chairman of Eastern Regional Aquaculture Association, Mr. Francis Gabrah has called on the government to re – introduce subsidies on fishing input to help boost their aquaculture sector.

According to him, government in the previous years used to supply fingerlings, fish feed and fishing nets through the Fisheries Commission to the fisher folks in a subsidized price for them to pay back.

Mr. Gabrah speaking at the inauguration of Eastern Region Branch of the Ghana Aquaculture Association at Atimpoku in the Asuogyman District added that this has been their challenge, but the major one has to do with government coming in to regulate and subsidies on agro loans.

He noted that, fisher folks cannot go in for loans or agro loans due to high rate of 40% to 50% interest unlike same areas which they have reduced to 5%.
