Farming is at risk with this heavy rainfall-Nelson Asiedu

Aside the still counting human lives being drowned by the recent heavy down pour of rains with business being slowed and to some extend closed down, farmers who will feed us are also of no exception.

The heavy down pour is likely to affect crops like maize, cassava, cocoyam, except rice and sugar cane says the former Agric extension officer and the C.E.O of Annex ‘A’ enterprise, Mr. Nelson Asiedu.

Speaking on the “AKUA FO SE SEN” segment of Rite FM’s morning ride, he said because of the delay in rains this season the recent rain is a good news though, it heaviness will damage a lot of farms.

He cautioned farmers to hold on a while before applying fertilizer or ploughing their lands. Since leaching can occur, were the flood can wash away the fertilizer to places where the plants cannot use.

He advised farmers to construct gullies in their farms to drain away stagnant water and those crop blown down by the wind should be supported with sticks to stand back again.

“Even germination of planted seeds can be destroyed” he mourned.
