Farmers to enjoy reduced fertilizer prices

By Joyce Bedeley:

Prices of compound fertilizer have been reduced from GH¢ 85 per 50kg bag to Gh c 52 per 50 kg bag effective Thursday, April 6, 2017. The disclosure was made by the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Dr. Owusu Afriyie  Akoto earlier on Thursday when he met with members of the National Farmers And Fishermen Award Winners Association Of Ghana, NFFAWAG at the ministries in Accra.

Rite news reporter, Prince Paul Amuzu who was at the event had earlier told Rite news that president of NFFAWAG, Mr. Davies Narh Korboe made a passionate plea to the sector minister to consider reducing the prices of fertilizer products.

The reduction is expected to come as a huge relief to the country’s farmers who have consistently lamented about the cost of fertilizer.

Though subsidies for fertilizer products were effected sometime in 2016, farmers have consistently complained about the cost of the product which is considered very essential to food production in the country. Former agric minister, Alhaji Lumina earlier in April 2016, announced that the selling prices of the various types of fertilizers for the 2016 farming season were GH¢ 85 per 50kg bag for compound fertilizer and GH¢ 80 per 50kg bag for Urea.
