Farmers at Okwenya cannot afford fertilizer for this major farming season

Mad. Patience Tetteh, a vegetable and maize farmer at Okwenya in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality in the Eastern Region has stated that farmers at Okwenya cannot afford the cost of fertilizer for their farming activities.

In an interview with her this morning on “Akuafo Si Sen” a segment on the morning Ride, she noted that, even though onion has a very high purchase, it needs more fertilizer and chemicals to boost it taste and it appearance before it can be sent to the market for sale but they do not have money to buy fertilizer.

Mad. Patience also revealed that, the farmers at Kpone have never received any fertilizer subsidy, they buy from the open market which a bag is about One hundred and two Ghana Cedis (Gh¢ 102.00) which they cannot afford so government should come to their aid. She urged.

Relating to this issue, the former Agric Extension Officer for the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), now the CEO of Annex ‘A’ Enterprise, Mr. Nelson Aseidu also added that, farmers should bear in mind that,  government does not import fertilizer rather, he subsidize the price.

Companies like Yara, Chemico, Dizengoff and the likes import fertilizer to the country for sale which the government also subsidizes the amount on condition bases. Some of the conditions were too hard especially for the distributors because it was too sacrificial which most of the distributors could not continue the distribution as they wished to.

Farmer Nelson therefore urged government to initiate a flexible conditions for the distributors so that the fertilizer subsidy will reach every farmer.
