Farmers Advised Against Planting One Crop Type

By: Catherine Ahiador:

The bounty harvest of watermelon today should ordinarily put smiles on the faces of many farmers. On the other hand, the question remains as to whether there is ready market for the bounty harvest. Mr. Limor Quashie who is the 2012 national best farmer has been addressing the issue on Rite FM.

On Wednesday’s Akuafo Sesen, he explained that the farmers need to be educated so that a particular type of crop would not be cultivated at the same time. “Farmers should all not plant one kind of crop at a time,” he stressed. “When this happens, we get bounty folds of a crop at a season and there’s the potential of it going waste,” he added.

Mr. Limor also noted that farmers were praying for a government who would have the welfare of farmers at heart and respond to their calls. He pointed out that extension officers have a role to play to educate the farmers.

According to him, farmers have grieved over the lack of processing companies for ages and it is high time that the government showed concern and provided the needs of the farmers. The companies have to be built so that harvested crops in large quantities would be sent there and be processed adding that in doing so, crops would not go waste.
