FAO Organizes Capacity Building In Digital Soil Mapping In Africa For Stakeholders

The Food and Agriculture Organization, FAO has organized a capacity building workshop on digital soil mapping in Africa for stakeholders at the Dodowa Forest Hotel.

Speaking to Rite FM in an exclusive interview,  Mr. Omotu Christian who is one of the training facilitators and a  Lecturer at the University of Nairobi in Kenya, said they are working in partnership with the FAO to introduce digital soil mapping which is currently going on in the world into Africa.

He said that, many countries in Africa do not have the knowledge about how to use the soil for a specific crop production “so that we don’t end up growing crops on the wrong soil” he said.  He added that they do not want Africa to be left behind, “that’s why we are introducing it to African soil scientists”.

Mr. Christian explained that the FAO is supporting 21 countries in Africa including Ghana to equip and train soil scientists. He noted that he is impressed with the level of participation and contribution, hoping that they will acquire the necessary skills in soil mapping to improve Agriculture in Africa.

He revealed that the FAO has provided them with a laptop and a software including database to help them enhance their work effectively after they have been given the required capacity building .
