Estates Developers and Churches Responsible For Agric Decline

By Prince Paul Amuzu:

Nana Opambour, the President for Concerned Farmers Association of Ghana has attributed the decline in agricultural production in the country to the activities of religious bodies especially Christianity and human settlement activities.

Speaking in an interview with Krobea Asante on Saturday’s Agric Forum on Rite FM, the chairman noted that the manner in which the churches are opening more branches in the rural areas especially in the farming communities and also the activities of estate developers have contributed immensely to the declining of agriculture.

Nana Opambuor therefore called for strong by-laws and its strict application to guide the public on where to put up building structures and where not to.

‘There should be laws guiding people on where to build and where not to build. This he said by highlighting the activities of estate developers acquiring almost every land leading to the destruction of forest reserves and afforestation because they have the money to buy the lands and even a poor farmer cannot get a piece of land to hire for farming .He has further lamented on the activities of the churches opening prayer camps and church branches on farm lands.

He has therefore challenged the government to as a matter of urgency secure farm lands by making and enforcing laws that will give landmarks for agricultural and other developments such as afforestation as done in other countries to improve upon the agricultural sector.
